I think of the collection of songs we choose to sing with our children as a treasure chest. Not only do they help us develop musical intuition, beat, rhythm, and melody, but they also give us opportunities to develop our creativity, confidence, patience, and sensitivity. They nourish our curiosity, interests, friendships, and our spirit.
The songs that I include in my complications are selected for their unique quality they “gift” humanity, and, especially, our children. Certain singing games I include because they bring tremendous joy and laughter; others I choose because they develop creativity through improvising texts and movements. Other songs I am taken by their beautiful melody that brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the soul. Many of these songs also contain specific musical concepts which we can then highlight and study in the music classroom. Each song is a precious gem.
